Microstructure and mechanical properties of synthetic bones

Bones are very dynamic structures and an important part of our bodies. They are essential in our locomotion abilities and additionally provide invaluable protection for vital organs.

Age related conditions (like osteoporosis), diseases or accidents are related to the damage and sometimes permanent loss of vital bone structures. Implants made of artificial materials are very helpful, but unfortunately they still lack many of the functionalities related to natural bones.

In spite of the great research efforts to develop more suitable bone replacement materials, we still are missing the properties in the nanoscale, which are essential to produce true bone-like prostheses.
